Where is Bethulie ?

This sleepy 'dorpie' (Afrikaans for village) Bethulie is situated approximately in the center of the Republic of South Africa, in a region known as the Bo-Karoo (Afrikaans for Upper Karoo), in the southern Free State (previously known as the Orange Free State). It is located on the northern banks of the Orange River, at the start of the Gariep Dam (also !Xhariep Dam, previously known as the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam). It also forms part the Lake Gariep (!Xhariep) Tourism Route which includes towns such as Oviston, Venterstad and Gariep.

It is approximately a 90 minute drive (185 km) south of Bloemfontein.



How to drive to Bethulie ?

From Gauteng (Johannesburg)

Along the N1
via Bloemfontein to Cape Town:
Follow the N1 towards Colesberg.
Approximately 140 km past Bloemfontein turn left at the R715 (6 km past the Engen Petrol Station at Springfontein)
Cross over the tarred R701 (Gariep Dam - Smithfield road) This intersection is +/- 37Kms from your last turn off.
Another 5 km and you are in Bethulie

Along the N6
via Bloemfontein to East London:

Follow the N6 towards East London. Drive past Reddersburg, then at Smithfield. Turn right onto the R701 to Bethulie. Bethulie is approximately 66 km from Smithfield.
Caution!  Approximately 30 km from this turnoff there is a T-junction which is not clearly marked on maps or on a GPS. Here you have to turn right again. Follow the signboards to Bethulie.

From Cape Town to Gauteng

Follow the N1 towards Bloemfontein, 48 km past Colesburg, after crossing the Orange (Gariep) River, take the Gariep / Bethulie off ramp.
Turn right towards Gariep at the Stop sign.
Shortly after crossing over the N1 turn left at the Bethulie turn off onto the R701.
Follow the R701 until the next Bethulie turn-off (54 km).

The climate in Bethulie

The Free State enjoys moderate temperatures in summer but relatively cold temperatures with some snow in the northern areas in winter.

The western and southern areas of the Free State and Karoo are classified as semi-desert. These parts experience large temperature differences between day and night.


Bethulie is located in the South African summer rainfall region.

Temperatures:
In Summer the Temperatures range from +19°C to +38°C.
In Winter the Temperatures range from -9°C to +18°C.
